Tara Ellis loves helping kids learn and progress in the world of cheer and tumbling. She’s been a coach for 16 years in Lenore, Tug Valley, and Morgantown, and she’s always had a passion for coaching competitive cheer. That’s what led her to open up Legacy Elite All Stars and Tumbling located in Aflex, Kentucky.
Sharing a Passion
“My business got started after I started feeling like I had so much more I wanted to achieve,” she says. “There are so many restrictions in high schools, so I wanted to break out on my own and build a legacy of competitive cheer.” With COVID-19, it seemed like the right time to make sure that no matter what, she could offer kids a place to do what they love. It’s been great for her. “I feel revived again, and that fire that was dimming has been burning strong,” Tara says.
Legacy Elite offers classes ranging from beginner to advanced on Monday through Thursday, as well as some Saturday classes. Classes emphasize building up techniques to move forward. “We pride ourselves on building up technique, starting with the basics and moving them up in classes as they advance,” Tara says. “Then we offer all star cheerleading. We have 3 teams our first year.” Age groups offered are: 3-6, 6-15, and ages 12 and up. Kids are placed by skill level as well as age.
They will start traveling to competitions throughout various states in January to compete for national titles, and a bid to summit at Disney World in May of 2021. For Tara, the best part of her job is seeing how her guidance can help students get better and better at cheer. “My favorite thing about running my business is watching kids learn and progress with proper teaching of skills. I love seeing them get those new skills for the first time. I also love to compete,” she says.
Tara’s favorite part of working in the area is the community she’s found. “The love for sports and the people who rally around and are willing to help kids financially and support them emotionally. The coalfields have wonderful people who support our sport and all the others.”
