Putting the “FUN” in Fundraising!
On July 20th, runners will gather at Mingo Central High School’s Harless Stadium for the 2nd Annual Miner Mountain 5K. Described on the 5K’s Facebook page as a “fun run”, the event won’t be timed, and participants are encouraged to run or walk at their own speed.
Wes Wilson, the president of the MCHS booster club, spends a lot of time working with the football coaches to find unique ways to support the team and organize fundraising events. “Lots of folks don’t realize how expensive high school football is,” explains Wes. “In our case, majority of the funds we receive are through donations… and fundraisers just like this.”
Wes and Josh Sammons, the coach of the football team, had the idea to host a running event at the high school last year. Through careful planning, they made it happen, and the first Miner Mountain 5K had more than 100 participants.
A “Fun Run” on a Beautiful Course
“The beauty, to me, of an event like this is that we're getting folks outside, participating in a healthy activity AND they're getting to experience one of the most beautiful 5K courses in the country,” says Wes.
You still have time to register! You can register at the event for $30, but if you register before the run, it’ll cost you $20, and you’re guaranteed a free t-shirt. It starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning!
