This Race is for the Dogs! (and their humans!)

On Saturday, February 15th the 7th annual Cause for Paws 10K/5K/1 Mile Walk presented by the Tug Valley Road Runners Club returns! Participants are encouraged to bring their furry friends to join them for this popular race!

To Help

This race is a fundraiser for Save Our Stray (SOS) Animal rescue located in Mingo County, West Virginia. Save Our Strays is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization in Mingo County, West Virginia. As a member of the Tug Valley Road Runners Club and animal lover, Leigh Ann Ray serves as race director for Cause for Paws.

“We have enjoyed working with SOS over the years,” Ray says. “Their organization is a vital part of our community. Thanks to their efforts and cooperation with the Mingo County Humane Office and other local rescue groups, no animals were euthanized at the Mingo County Animal Control Facility in 2018 or 2019.”

In Memory Of

This year the race will be dedicated to the late Steve Baisden. Steve was an avid supporter of the Tug Valley Road Runners Club, participating in nearly all their races each year. Steve was a friend to everyone he met, including animals.

“Steve ran every TVRRC race and had a heart of gold. He always supported our races-no matter the cause. He has left a void,” says Leigh Ann.

Steve’s widow, Susan Baisden tells us, “It’s a great honor for this race to be dedicated to Steve. He loved participating in the TVRRC races, and loved the purpose of this particular race. It was this month last year Steve passed away, and I cannot think of any better way to remember him.”

Cause for Paws will be hosted on Saturday, February 15th beginning at 11 a.m., with race day registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. Participants may register in advance at the historic Coal House or at the Williamson Health and Wellness Outreach Office, both located on 2nd Avenue, downtown Williamson. Online registration is also available on

Registration fees for Cause for Paws are: $30.00 for the 10K prior to race day, $35.00 on race day; $20.00 for the 5K and 1 Mile Walk prior to race day, $25.00 on race day. Participants will receive a race shirt and finisher medal and have a shot at winning overall and age awards.

Memorial and honor signs for pets are available again this year for purchase. The signs feature photos of the pets and will be displayed along the courses that day. If purchased new, signs are $25.00 each. Those who purchased signs last year and wish to have them displayed again this year may do so for $10.00 each.

Various sponsorship levels are available for this event for individuals and businesses.

“We appreciate our sponsors,” stresses Leigh Ann, “The more sponsors we have, the more money we can give to SOS.”

Anyone interested in purchasing a memorial or honor signor sponsoring the race should contact Leigh Ann at 606-794-3564.
