3rd Annual Peirce Whitt Cornhole Tournament

Updated: Aug 8, 2019

Camping trips, family reunions, and any kind of summertime get together have one thing in common: cornhole.

Cornhole Craze

Cornhole is a Southern tradition for nearly any social gathering, but the popularity of the game has grown way beyond America in recent years. The American Cornhole League is working to build an international culture around the sport through partnerships across the globe such as a friendly tournament in Germany. This global interest has captured the attention of major TV sports networks like ESPN2 which now shows the World Cornhole Organization’s World Cornhole Cup.

Carrying On The Joy

Williamson surely isn’t missing out on this opportunity to have some fun and carry on this tradition. In order to continue this Southern tradition, Starters Bar and Grill is hosting the 3rd annual Peirce Whitt Cornhole Tournament on August 10th. Starters used to host numerous cornhole tournaments, and Peirce Whitt always played a key role in planning and orchestrating these events. Those at Starters say this is something he always enjoyed, and this event serves as a way to carry on the joy and fun of cornhole in his memory. Along with honoring Whitt, the event also helps draw a crowd to one of the areas most popular restaurants.

Brandon Ball, a regular participant in the tournament, said, “I got involved because I worked with Peirce, and he helped me out in many ways.” Ball also said he and Peirce started these tournaments together when cornhole grew in our area. Now, four years after Peirce’s passing, the tradition continues to thrive under new leadership, but Ball is looking forward to this year’s competition hoping for a great turnout and maybe another win.

For those interested in participating, you can register at Starters starting at 7:00 that evening or you can call them at 235-8600.

Be sure to stop by Starters on August 10th at 8:00 p.m. for plenty of fun, food, prizes and of course, cornhole!
