Bill Smith Memorial Bulldog 5K and 1 Mile Walk

The Tug Valley Road Runners Club is hosting its annual Bill Smith Memorial Bulldog 5K and 1 Mile Walk on August 31st. This event is just the first in the club’s “The Fastest, the Dirtiest, and the Oldest” race series consisting of this race, the Coal Dust run on September 14th, and the Frank O’Brien Memorial 8K and 2 Mile Walk.

Honoring A Local Legend

Smith was a longtime coach at Burch high school. He and the Burch Lady Bulldogs earned the title of Class A champions in 1990, Burch’s only girls state title, and state runner-up in 1991. He also helped assistant coach the boys' basketball team during their championship seasons of 1989, 1991, and 1993. Smith’s time coaching at Burch high school left a lasting mark on the area, and after his passing in 2014, this race became the community’s way of honoring his

accomplishments.
