“The mountains are calling, and I must go.”

- John Muir, philosopher, author, and advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States.

I’m not sure which mountains he was referring to, but I’m certain Muir would have heard the mountains of southern West Virginia calling to him. Mountains and sunsets are two of nature’s most beautiful wonders. Mountaintop Adventures has combined these for their Sunset Tour guided trail rides.

What You Need to Know

The Sunset Tours happen every Tuesday and Friday, from March through November. The tour consists of approximately thirty miles of amazing views on the ATV trails. Starting in Gilbert, West Virginia at the Twin Hollow Campground, you will ride on a reclaimed mining site which is now a breathtaking scenic overlook that allows you to witness sunset across the states of Virginia and Kentucky. Also, known as the “Horse Tours”, you will have the chance to see and feed horses along the way, before traveling the trail back to the campground.

You don’t want to miss these tours. Each trip leaves Twin Hollow Campground approximately ninety minutes before sunset. As the summer days grow longer, the start time changes so be sure to check the time of your journey. Reservations can be made by calling Mountaintop Adventures at 304-664-8864 or online at twinhollowcampground.com. Cost per rider is $20 and children age nine and under are $10 each. Cost does include carrots to feed the horses. Nice touch, huh?

What are you waiting for? Come visit the mountains of southern West Virginia. I know you hear them calling.
